We created the Corrulute, a stringed musical instrument kit, so that anyone can design, make and play their own unique instrument. In the process you will have a load of fun whilst also learning a wide range of skills which you can then apply to future projects. Although the original concept was designed with children in mind we quickly discovered that adults gain just as much satisfaction and enjoyment from building and playing Corrulutes.
We see ourselves as part of the growing maker community. By creating a high quality, fully functioning musical instrument from scratch you will gain a deeper understanding of the process of design and construction. You will also be more motivated to go on to learn to play as you will have a strong sense of ownership. In any case learning to play a corrulute is a cinch as it's tuned exactly like a ukulele.
The Corrulute's USP is its folding body which offers you a blank canvas on which to add your own designs and create a true one off instrument! It can be built without the need for any specialist tools or prior skills either by following the simple online instructions or attending a workshop. As a rough guide an adult can build a corrulute in a couple of hours and then spend as long as they like decorating the body!
We have spent the last few years refining the design and validating proof of concept through running highly successful workshops for adults and children in festivals, schools and corporate events. We have also found that running workshops in family environments work particularly well.
